Relative Connections Project

Everybody has a story to tell and it's the stories that make whole the fabric of our personal histories. The stories tell us where we came from, who we are. Here are some of the stories submitted to this project.

My name is Cynthia Tom. I am native of San Francisco and a fourth generation Chinese American creating my art through painting, creating mixed media 2 and 3D assemblages, building life size installations and have begun curating projects as well.
I focus mainly on the concept of female, connecting to the communities around me and rooted in my ancestry as I know it from Angel Island 1923.
Words most often used to describe my work include, surrealism, narrative, cultural, feminine, psychological, colorful, thought provoking, nurturing, to name a few.
I rely on my art, the creative process, the discussions that develop because of it, the community it continually provides me to give a sense of purpose in the world and my point for striving (can be exhausting) to reach the next plaine of experiences.
